A question about bow & arrows….?

What is the strongest type of wood to make for a bow and for arrows? is there more than one kind of strong wood for them? how would you make one?
Thanks in advance!!!

Yew was the traditional wood that was used in England for long bows. In north America the Indians used hickory, osage orange, ash, maple, elm and others. I’ve seen good bows made from hickory and osage orange. I saw and shot a bow made from two hickory pick handles that were pinned and epoxyed together. It shot well but was kind of heavy for me at about 75lbs draw.

Archery Equipment – Compound Bows

Archery Equipment – Compound Bows:

Compound Bows may look more complicated and seem that way, Technically speaking they are a bow in the same manner a traditional bow would be. All bows regardless of whether there traditional, or compound, Still have specularity in common. All bows share the class of being simple mechanical devices which store and transfer human energy to an arrow as the bowstring is released. Many factors are involved to the extent that storage and transmission are physical, technical and therefore emotional. Your personal objective is still to accurately and persistently propel a sharpened arrow to its target. Threw some years between 50,000 and 25,000 years ago, Those primary targets wold have been food and animals and or enemy soldiers.

Today, targets can range from animals to a competition target. But for a lot of people hunting is still the main objective of this fascinating and unique hobby of archery. Sometimes these targets can be 3-D depictions of the animals as a archery practice device, against another archers ability’s. Sometimes these may simply be painted circles used to test your skills against another’s. Compound Bows with complex wheels, cams , strings, cables, yokes, nuts and bolts, along with other high end devices attached through one part or another. These devices were thought up to make the process of archery easier on the human muscular system and also to produce a more accurate arrow. Keep in mind that the energy must still be provided by the archer himself. The energy has always been stored in the bow limbs to produce the needed friction until released by the shooter.

Compound Bows were first invented in 1969, Records of this show from original drawings which the patent granted date is stated as December 30th,1969. This same design is still the valid representation of what the Compound Bow is today, Although many improvements have been made in these last some 40 years. No improvements as such to destroy what the Compound Bow represents to the archer. Before the development of the Compound Bow, Recurved Bows were what most archers would use. These are a far cry from the bows that Robin Hood probably used. These Recurved Bows are of a classic style shape and in some ways do resemble the Compound Bow. There seems to be some singularity between these two types, but this is were that ends. If we compare the Compound Bow to a Traditional Longbow rated at 60 pounds, the archer must pull back and hold the full 60 pounds at the established draw length in order to shoot an arrow.

We know get the drift of how much easier it is to shoot with a Compound Bow opposed to its Traditional Bow counterpart. With a Compound Bow the archer is only required to pull back 30 pounds to reach the full shooting potential. Now this is all dependent upon the amount of let-off designed into the rated eccentric wheels. These wheels that we are talking about are sometimes referred to as cams, modified cams or energy wheels, These terms are usually governed by the respective manufacturer.

We learn in all of this, the average archer can usually shoot a Compound Bow of much higher poundage, Reason being the archer can hold his bow at full draw a much longer period of time. In hence, this would not be remotely possible with a Traditional Bow at the same pound rate. If considering that all other aspects maybe the same, the higher the bow poundage, the faster our arrow will reach out intended target. In hence, A faster arrow will fly in a flatter trajectory with a lot less chance of a missed target. Even possibly if our range were to be misjudged, We should still get to the point of target we were looking for. We must remember that no matter what, The archer still must exert the same amount of force and muscle to draw either type of bow. The longer the archer has to hold back the arrow and string , the more strain must be put on the muscles. Also if the archer intends to pull back the string past the bows rating, the amount of effort will also build exponentially. This same effect may be argued regarding the Compound Bow, when the rated draw is reached, an abrupt and distinct stopping point is felt in terms of the archer.

No matter which type of bow is used, It’s a fun and enjoyable hobby.

We learn that the bow doesn’t just belong to Robin Hood or William Tell but to all of us.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.

How can i make a homemade spear?

i have a a project for school and i have to get ideas for how i can make a good spear..

If you have access to a nature reserve, then just find a branch on the ground (ie don’t cut it off a tree) that is reasonably straight. Or get yourself some bamboo.

Otherwise you can always go to the hardware store and buy a thick piece of dowling.

For the actual spear section, you can cut the shape out of cardboard and either spray it with copper paint or cover it with tin foil. Or check your local creek for a stone that is the right shape, and then strap it to the wood with a skinny piece of leather bought from an offcuts bin at a fabric/craft store.

how long will 99 fletching take from 85?

I am currently 170k till 86 fletching. I’m making magic longbows so i don’t loose money. How long do you think it’ll take to make 52k of them, I play about 4 and a half hours a day.

My name on rs is: Dead By Obby

Ha when I played this game it literally took me flipping 5 months to get to 99 fletching from about 85. But this was when I had school and sports and stuff so if you play for like 5 hours a day cut that in half.

real nice crossbow with no string don’t know manufacture?

I will take it to a bow shop but how can I be sure I am getting good information? Is there some sort of math formula? with my bow relaxed it is 24 9/16” from where the string would rest. measuring from the bow limbs back to where the string is held when cocked is 13 3/4” I took this measurement with the trigger mech cocked obviously no string. The only other dimension I can think to take is the length of the cocking cable used to string and unstring the bow and it is 29”. Don’t know how that could be used except the main string would have to be shorter.
I picked this bow up used with no string and sombody along the way did a camo job on it and I can’t tell the brand make or model. The main thing is saftey I want the correct string and also do not want somebody to make me one custom because they make more money that way, or whatever. Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Without knowing the designed draw weight of the prod, the only method that really works is not safe. All you can do is approximate the pull and hope you don’t go over.

My suggestion would be first, use some turpentine and see if you can find a maker/model under that paint?

My second suggestion would be take it to the shop and ask for a stock string. It’ll cost $5. It’s only a guess, but they’ll be able to guess closer than you or I chatting in text.

Bow and Arrow Help Please!!!!?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a bow and arrow out of wood that I could get from a big wooded area by my house. What tools what I need to make a really authentic looking bow and arrow. Also does anyone know where I might be able to buy a bow and arrow like the one in Rambo II.

Three rivers archery has some great recommendations on bow making, if the woods around you have Osage trees your in luck. As for the Rambo Bow that was a custom made bow by Hoyt and is no longer in production. You might find a used one on Ebay but there just collector items now and to old to shoot safely.

Is there a way to make a wooden spear tip harder?

i made a spear but i dont know how to make the tip stronger.

well it can be charred in a fire and sanded after its charred . Or whittled a bit after its charred . you dont want to burn it up just a few minutes over a fire whittle it a little and repeat till you get it the way you want it.The drying process will harden it.

White Ash or Hickory is a good wood to use for those kinds of things.

how much different strips of wood do you need to support a long bow?

i don’t know how much and what kinds of wood to make a bow that doesnt break. this is my first try, ican get all the equipment i just need to know what to get. can a hickory backing and hickory stave with hickory riser block work?
plese include all the information you can give thanks
ps do you know if longbows are legal in maryland?

Building a laminated bow can be very complicated or fairly simple. I recommend you search for bow makers sites including this one http://wwmag.net/archery.htm . There are probably dozens of them.
Long bows are so awkward, that I doubt any state limits, licenses, or bans them (cross bows maybe). I can easily imagine a news story "The bank robber tried to leave the building with his long bow, but got hung up in the door and nearly hung himself."
